Before You Buy A Metal Detector

So, you are planning to buy a metal detector? Well, thats good news, but there are certain things you need to know before you do this. It is also important to know why you want to buy a machine. Is it something you have planned to do for a long time or just an instant thought? This hobby is a hobby for the long haul, great patience is a must to succeed, so if you are a person with little patience this hobby may not be the one for you.
Our hobby can be compared to fishing, an angler does not pull up trophy fish all the time. He waits, he pick the spots with best potential to catch the big ones that lurks around. He knows that there is many small ones there and they take his bait too. You can be sure that every time he pulls up a big one, he has landed a huge amount of small ones. That`s the part of the game.
Each time you see a proud detectorist displays his latest great find you can be sure he has dug a lot of trash and low value items between the goodies.
But the first thing you have to be aware of is that a metal detector has a steap learning curve and it takes time to know it. Each type has their own sound pattern and only small nuances will separate junk from valuable targets. In the beginning you will have to dig all these sounds to see what comes up and after a while you will see a pattern here. Every detectorist have to go through that stage because no detector can tell you with 100% certainty whats down there. Many of them have great features on the display showing you a coin, or jewelry or junk but the truth is do not rely upon this. Many factors down there will fool any detector, mineralzation, soil type etc. and junk metal as aluminium and tin is very close to silver and gold in conductivity. The rule is; the deeper the harder it is to separate junk from goodies.
The old and valuable stuff lies mostly deep so this will be a challenge for any detectorist.
To many beginners have bought a metal detector, switched it on and expected to pull up silver and gold everywhere. After a few days digging dirt and junk they eventually get disappointed and blame the detector and put it away. Do not fall into that trap, be prepared, be aware of how this will be and deal with it. Wipe dust of your patience, learn what your great detector tells you and be prepared to dig a lot of junk. The comfort is that slowly as you learn the freqency of digging goodies will rise as the digging of trash will decrease to a minimum.
